Skin
Dose Monitor (SDM)
The
X-ray Exposure Monitor
Will
an Image of the Sensor Fibre be Seen on the Fluoro Monitor
or Films?
The active tip of the sensor will be seen, but it
is only 1mm in diameter and 0.2mm thick. The
fibre will not show on fluoro images, but may just be
visible on a chest film.
How
do I Select the Sensor Location?
This
is dependent on the examination. In some
cases it is known where the centre of the radiation
beam will be located on the patients skin. In
other cases the sensor placement can be differed until
the optimum radiation beam direction is established. Fixing
the sensor then only takes a few seconds.
Does
the Instrument Require a Special Installation?
No. Make
sure the batteries are charged, plug in the sensing
fibre and the system is fully operational.
Is
the Dose Display Accurate?
The
sensor measures absorbed dose directly, not air kerma. Calibration
can be checked locally against a reference instrument. The
accuracy is well within the limits suggested by the
FDA as necessary for patient risk assessment.
Is
the Instrument Safe?
The optical fibre of the sensor provides an effective
means of electrically isolating the sensor pad.
