Skin Dose Monitor (SDM)

The X-ray Exposure Monitor

What is the Skin Dose Monitor (SDM)?
The SDM is a device that can be used by medical staff during lengthy X-ray procedures to assist in minimising the amount of X-ray exposure encountered by the patient.

It is now possible to monitor on a real-time basis the skin entry dose during invasive X-ray procedures.

A disposable radiation sensor is fixed to the patients skin, gown or a surface of the X-ray equipment such as the couch.  The sensor absorbs a very small proportion of the X-ray photons and converts them into visible light.

This sensor is coupled to a small processing and display instrument that gives a visible reading.
